Geography GCSE: Package Holiday Case Study (Ayia Napa)

  • ·      Location- East coast of Cyprus
  • ·      Number of tourists risen from 47,000 in 1975 to 2,223,000 in 2000.
  • ·      Human attractions:

o   Large waterpark called waterworld
o   Makronissos tombs dating back to the roman period
  • ·      Physical attractions

o   Hot summers with average temp 28 degrees C.
o   Akamas peninsula home to unique flora and fauna eg sea turtles


Impacts

  • ·      Economic:

o   Provides 20% of GDP in country, a figure which is doubled with the multiplier effect.
o   Many jobs are seasonal so locals are unemployed during winter months, such as employees at Nissi Beach hotel.
  • ·      Environmental

o   Lara beach on Akamas peninsula protected for turtles to lay eggs.
o   Huge tourist numbers on Nissi and Adams beach means turtles are unable to lay eggs there
  • ·      Social

o   Local youth have much better nightlife due to clubs for tourists
o   Local fishermen have fewer fish to catch as they are being scared away by tourists.


Sustainability

  • ·      CTO enforced separation of youth tourism and quieter resorts by building luxury resorts and golf courses near the coast and pubs and nightclubs in the centre of Ayia Napa.
  • ·      CTO encouraging quality (high spending) over mass tourism, reducing pressure on authorities and infrastructure and aid in the re-imaging of Ayia Napa.
  • ·      CTO improving ease of access to cultural sites such as Tombs of the Kings in Phaphos which currently lacks shaded seating.
